Kui vaim ja keha ei tee koostööd / When mind and body are not cooperating

Mind: „What if it doesn’t work anymore“
Heart: „Just go, you know how to do it“
Mind: „What if my shape is not good enough“
Heart: „It is, all your trainings have shown that“
Mind: „What if I still screw up“
Heart: „You won’t!“

Katsevõistlusi pidin jooksma väikse jalaprobleemiga, mis segas eriti just metsas jooksmist.

Lühirajal sai see minust täielikult võitu.

Mind: „You really screwed up everything“

Vastasel juhul on minu MMil jooksmine küsimärgi all.

The dialog is describing exactly what has happened inside me during the last month. My organism and body are in good condition, all trainings are showing that my shape is really good, but somewhere inside me is a quiet voice asking what if it’s not enough, what if I can’t push myself hard enough, or what if I screw up technically.

The correct answer would be that nothing happens. I should just go to start line without any hesitations and enjoy every second that I have for it. I have chosen this path. Nobody forces me to train day by day and run all these competitions, but this is my choice. I go because I want to! And this quiet voice shouldn’t even exist inside of me because I have decided to take this path just because of myself.

This quiet voice arose during the spring when I felt that my physical shape is times better compared to last year and when I felt small hesitation that how will it reflect in my results. No pressure from outside, just a small hesitation moment in myself.

This quiet voice has become louder and louder during the last month.

When I allowed myself a short break after crazy traveling and competing season in April and May, then after starting my trainings again I felt like all starts I had made had each taken a small piece of me, so I just felt that there is not enough time to get back my really good shape. In reality, I had enough time because I didn’t need these trainings as in winter/spring. I just had to rest and do some important trainings to get this good flow back. But this was the thing I didn’t understand at that moment, so the quiet voice inside me got louder.

The most important competition of the season came closer and closer. My goal was to get to run World Champs middle distance and relay. I had run two testraces out of three really well, but I was afraid of the last one.

Mind: „What if it doesn’t work anymore“
Heart: „Just go, you know how to do it“
Mind: „What if my shape is not good enough“
Heart: „It is, all your trainings have shown that“
Mind: „What if I still screw up“
Heart: „You won’t!“

I had to run last selection races in Latvia with a small leg problem that was especially disturbing running in the forest. It was something that was another trigger for the doubting voice in me.

Sprint selection race showed that I still have speed and my shape is good, but it didn’t help to shut down the voice inside me. During the middle distance, it got the control over me. My leg problem took away my thoughts so I couldn’t orienteer or run, and I finished with one of my worst performances in this season. Even after this one bad race, I had hope to get to run distances that I had worked especially hard in this year. My inner voice was just laughing and said that that’s it. I went running a long distance just because otherwise I wouldn’t even have a chance to get to run World Champs forest individual distances. And just running because of that I couldn’t do at all what I had to.

When I got to know a few days later that I didn’t get my middle distance place but I still got the place in the relay team, then it was extremely controversial for me. It was that moment when all pieces just fell apart and this voice inside me took everything under its control.

Mind: „You really screwed up everything“

A few days later I had to go to Finland to run World University Champs, but I was mentally so out that during the model event and middle distance I felt like I was orienteering first time in my life. I also twisted my ankle in the middle distance. Somehow I was able to do technically a good performance in sprint distance but I just couldn’t force myself to run with that mental condition. After that technically good sprint, I was hoping to get back my good orienteering feeling in the long distance. But once more I couldn’t understand what is going on in my head and the only right decision felt quitting the race and making a break. I had to run the relay on the last day, so I could prepare for World Champs in Latvia, but I decided to skip it because it just felt so wrong.

I feel like I have lost all of my orienteering skills. When I have previously thought about myself more like a technical orienteerer then based on my last competitions I don’t have this skill at all…

When watching competitions on the internet or at the competition center then I’ve always had the feeling that I would love to run as well. This time I just had emptiness inside me while I was watching the relay. I was happy that I don’t have to run. It showed exactly how wrong are things inside me right now and how badly I need a break to get everything at the right place.

When I planned to go to Latvia and make the last preparation for the World Champs relay and go to Tallinn to get a good sprint feeling, then now I came to Sweden instead of that. I hope that coming back to the environment, from where I got the very good feeling at the beginning of the season that said that everything is possible, helps to get everything clear again.

There are one and half weeks left until World Champs in Latvia. Hopefully, I can get my mental side at the right place and find my orienteering skills at the end of this week latest. Otherwise, there is a big question mark on top of my participation in World Champs.
